Green Day se forme en 1989 à Berkeley aux Etats-Unis. Les deux amis d'enfance Billie Joe Armstrong (guitare, chant) et Mike Dirnt (basse) forment à l'âge de 14 ans leur premier groupe Sweet Children à Rodeo en Californie. Avec l'arrivée du batteur John Kiffmeyer, Sweet Children devient Green Day et signe le maxi 1,000 Hours qui reçoit un bon accueil sur la scène punk hardcore californienne. Peu après, Tre Cool entre dans la formation à la place de John Kiffmeyer. En 1992, le groupe sort l'album Kerplunk .

Le succès arrive en 1994 avec l'album Dookie qui contient les singles Longview et Basket case. La même année Green Day fait un passage remarqué à Woodstock dans un concert qui se terminera en bateille de boue géante. Dookie se vend à plus de onze millions d'exemplaires dans le monde. Fin 1995, Green Day enchaîne avec l'album Insomniac qui se vend à plus de deux millions d'exemplaires. Se plaignant d'être épuisé, le groupe annule sa tournée européenne et se laisse une année pour écrire l'album suivant Nimrod qui sort en 1997. Pour beaucoup Nimrod est le meilleur album du groupe, il marque surtout un premier tournant dans la carrière du groupe symbolysé par le titre "Time of your life" qui reste encore une des chansons les plus connues et les plus appréciées du repertoire de Green Day.
